+5 years for women and +3 years for men

We read the interesting paper “Future life expectancy in 35 industrialised countries: projections with a Bayesian model ensemble” from Vasilis Kontis, PhD†, James E Bennett, PhD†, Colin D Mathers, PhD, Guangquan Li, PhD, Kyle Foreman, PhD and Prof Majid Ezzati, FMedSci.

The good news is that life expectancy in Spain should rise by about 5 years for women and 3 years for men living in Spain in 2030.

As of 2010, life expectancy for women living in Spain was third in the world behind Japan and France and 5th for men.

Some reasons we spotted why people live longer in Spain are:

  • Health Care System rank for Spain by the World Health Organization is the seventh in the world.
  • Work life balance rank in the World: Spain is at the fourth place behind the Netherlands, the Denmark and France. What a terrific result!

Others reasons the OECD give are:

  • The ability to successfully combine work, family commitments and personal life are important for the well-being of all members of a household.
  • In Spain, full-time workers devote 66% of their day on average, or 15.9 hours, to personal care (eating, sleeping, etc.) and leisure (socialising with friends and family, hobbies, games, computer and television use, etc.) – more than the OECD average of 15 hours.

Read more on that in our section “10 reasons to buy in Spain” and check the section on life expectancy from OECD.

Here is a quick summary of the papers’ findings:

Life expectancy is projected to increase in all 35 countries with a probability of at least 65% for women and 85% for men. There is a 90% probability that life expectancy at birth among South Korean women in 2030 will be higher than 86·7 years, the same as the highest worldwide life expectancy in 2012, and a 57% probability that it will be higher than 90 years. Projected female life expectancy in South Korea is followed by those in France, Spain, and Japan.

The female life expectancy advantage over men is likely to shrink by 2030 in every country except Mexico, where female life expectancy is predicted to increase more than male life expectancy, and in Chile, France, and Greece where the two sexes will see similar gains.
